The Florida Master Septic Tank Contractor License
ABOUT THE
PROGRAM
BENEFITS TO THE CUSTOMER
In 1996, the Florida Department of Health initiated a program which allowed contractors with at least 3 years of experience as a Florida-registered septic tank contractor to seek advanced training and qualify as "Master Septic Tank Contractors."
Applicants must complete 30 hours of coursework on soil classification, system design and theory, contractor ethics, system material and construction standards and regulatory requirements, and must pass examinations on each section as well as a rigorous final exam, all administered by the Department of Health. Annual renewal of the license is required and contractors must complete 18 hours of approved coursework each year to maintain their registration.
Master Contractors are allowed to perform a number of the duties (such as site evaluations, repair permitting and inspections) that were previously done only by state health inspectors.
SITE
EVALUATIONS:
A site evaluation is
required by the Health Department before issuing a permit to install a septic
system. This involves making one or more borings in the soil of your lot,
determining the seasonal high water table and soil type and porosity, which are
factors in determining what size and type of system will be required. A Health
Department officer performing this evaluation will make a boring only at the
spot you indicate, which may not be the best location for your system. When
Apalachee Backhoe & Septic Tank, LLC does the evaluation we can study the
site and make several borings to find the absolute best area to install your
system. There are occasions when a less expensive system is required simply by
moving the location from one area to another.
